Nikola’s Retrain Campaign

Name: Nikola
Location: Kilkenny

Tell me a little bit about yourself.

My name is Nikola. I am originally from Slovakia. I moved to Ireland 6 years ago. I fell in love with Ireland, and wanted to stay, live and work here.

What motivated you to enrol in the Resilience Healthcare re-train programme?

I was working in O Brien's as a barista. I wanted to change my career as I didn’t see my future as a barista. I always wanted to work with kids and help people in need. When I heard about the retrain programme, I thought it was a no-brainer to apply and luckily, I interviewed and was accepted!

Is it what you expected?

I had never worked in social care so I could not have imagined what was waiting for me.

What were the biggest challenges you faced during the programme? And how did you overcome them?

My biggest challenges were seeing some of the children harming themselves (biting hands or head banging).

What has been your biggest achievement or success story?

When I saw one of the residents smile, she had never smiled before. That was a special day. It really is the little things, watching the service users who you care for, achieving the smallest of goals. It’s amazing.

How does your experience in the programme compare to your expectations?

My experience in the retrain programme has been very good. At times it has been a little tough; trying to find the time to complete the course and spend time with my family, all while working full time.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling in the programme?

My advice would be to do it! It is a very rewarding programme. Also, don’t stress and don't worry if you are struggling with something, the team at Resilience Healthcare are extremely nice and are always willing to help.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I want to learn and better myself and progress within Resilience Healthcare.
