A Great Win for All

The first ever Resilience football tournament

In Resilience Social Care, Bringing Possible to Life is always the goal

We encourage our service users to take on new challenges, to join in activities out in the community, and to have fun. This was absolutely the spirit of the day on 26th August in Roscrea - when we held our inaugural annual football tournament, bringing together service users and Resilience Social Care employees to enjoy ‘the beautiful game’ and have some fun.

The tournament, which is set to be an annual event, saw support workers and service users from the company’s different residential houses and day services come together with Resilience corporate employees - and play against each other in a series of football matches.

We loved how the day brought everyone together, with teams travelling to Roscrea from our services in all corners of the country. Everyone got into the spirit of the day and loved the match action, with players giving it their all on the field, and spectators providing excellent support from the side lines. It was a close call, but one team had the edge, and we proudly awarded the coveted Resilience annual football tournament trophy for the first time, to Verna House from Tullaroan in Kilkenny.

Levelling the Field

A member of the Verna House Support Worker team summed up the day:

It was such a great Tournament. There was no distinction made on the field between men, women, those with disabilities and those without. Everyone played their part and had great crack.

A great exercise in teamwork.

As well as being really good fun, all our service users embraced the challenge, and it was a great exercise in teamwork.

Of course, as a day dedicated to ‘getting active,’ the Tournament brought a wealth of other important benefits. Resilience Director of Social Care, Sinead Butler, explains:

Physical activity has a substantial positive impact on the lives of our service users – physically, emotionally and mentally. From better overall fitness, to improving motor skills and social skills, being active is an important part of the Resilience Social Care journey.

All the Extra Fun

To add to the day’s festivities, there were lots of other games and events, such as an extremely competitive three-legged race! We also brought in a fabulous food truck to keep the energy levels up with delicious food and drinks and topped it off with an ice-cream van in the evening.

Thanks to All

We’re hugely grateful to everyone who helped make the day such a success. It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Killavilla United AFC, who kindly let us use their fabulous facilities for the day. We also say a big thank you to the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), especially North Tipperary Development Officer, Tracy Gleeson, who kindly sponsored our Tournament with superb prizes for our service users.

Initiatives like this inspire and drive us to be the change in Social Care - and we’re already planning and looking forward to next year’s Tournament!
