Celebrating ‘Realising Potential’ on Graduation Day!

If there’s one thing we love and celebrate at Resilience, it’s when potential is realised. When our service users reach new milestones and do something they’ve never done before, or a resident develops a new interest. And of course, we love it too when our team members realise their own potential – succeeding and advancing in the work that they love so much.

That’s why it was a special day for us recently when two of our colleagues graduated in their specialised field, from University College Cork.

Keith and Vivien both completed the 2-year Autism Studies course at UCC – achieving their Level 7 in Autism and graduating with diplomas.

Supporting all the Way

Both Keith and Vivien started work at Resilience as Relief Support Workers. In just 3 years, Keith has progressed to the position Senior Support Worker, while Vivien is now Team Leader.

Throughout the course, Resilience supported both Keith and Vivien on their journey – funding 50% of the cost of their studies and giving freely the time and support they required for study and assignments. They both thanked Resilience for backing them all the way:

Keith says: “Resilience has gone above and beyond to make sure we got all the support we needed. Having started working for resilience over 2 years ago as relief staff and to now be senior support – it’s just another step in the right direction”.

Vivien adds: “I want to say a massive thank you to Resilience for their support. I came here as a support worker, and I have been supported to learn and develop to Team Leader in Verna House.”

Both Keith and Vivien also give special thanks to their colleagues, especially Michelle Long and Emma Daly at Verna House: “They went above and beyond to help us whenever we needed the extra push to get through.” says Vivien.

A Focus on What is Possible

The UCC Autism Studies completed by the pair focuses on how the conceptualisation and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder has changed over the years. Most interestingly, it looks at both the ‘challenges and strengths of Autism’: at how people with Autism can excel in specific areas. This is right in line with our ethos of Realising Potential.

We find a lot of courses are focused on the deficits of Autism. We look at Autism from a much broader perspective – where some people with Autism might have notable talent, great strengths. We talk about the different interventions and supports we can offer people with Autism and how they can be used to really help a person achieve their full potential.
